Als ich den Song ‚Let’s Get Lost‘ aus dem Debüt-Album von Gong Wah, welcher gleichzeitig der Opener ist, hörte, schoß mir als erstes die Sängerin Blondie in den Kopf und ich fragte mich, ob es sich um eine englische oder deutsche Band handelt. Denn dies ließ sich nicht auf Anhieb raushören. ‚Let’s Get Lost‘ verbindet starke verzerrte Gitarrenriffs mit Vintagesound, klarem zarten Gesang und einem sehr schnell im Gehörgang bleibenden Refrain.
Der Hörer wird teilweise in die Zeit des Glam-Rock der 70er Jahre transportiert. Aber man sollte Musik nicht in Schubladen packen und ‚Gong Wah‘ sind auch in keiner Genre Ecke vollkommen zu Hause, denn sie scheinen ihren eigenen frischen Wind mit rein zu bringen.
Vor fast drei Jahren trafen sich Sängerin Inga Nelke und die beiden Gitarristen Thorsten Dohle und Felix Will zu einer Session in ihrem Kölner Proberaum und kreierten, von einer Drum-Maschine begleitet, eher zufällig einen Sound, den sie selbst Fuzz Wave nennen.
Gong Wah traten mit der wirkungsvollen Gesangsstimme von Inga Nelke und dem Gitarrensound von Thorsten Dohle und Felix Will , der von eine Kette von Effektgeräten dominiert war, auf. Die Drums und der Bass wurden damals von einem 80er Jahre Tapedeck abgespielt. Ende 2018 wurde während eines Gigs jenes Tapedeck mit den Backingtracks leider vollkommen zerstört. Der spätere Gong Wah Bassist Giso Simon und Drummer Nima Davari waren bei diesem Szenario mit im Publikum hautnah dabei. Seither sind beide fester Bestandteil der Band.
‚I Hate You‘ ist eine rockige Nummer mit psychedelic Elementen. Die Riffs bei „Sugar & Lies“ erinnern eindeutig an die ‚Status Quo‘ Hymne ‚Whatever You Want‘ und man bekommt effektiven Boogie Rock zu spüren. Ruhigere Töne dürfen auf einem Album natürlich auch nicht fehlen, diese werden bei ‚Contaminated Concrete‘ angestimmt. Just Sayin‘ hat hypnotisierende Nuancen.
Gong Wah verbinden gekonnt Krautrock, New Wave und Psychedelic Rock miteinander.
Die CD’s des Debütalbums sind auf 500 Stück und die Vinyl Variante sind auf 300 Stück limitiert. Da heißt es schnell sein!

When I heard the song ‚Let’s Get Lost‘ from Gong Wah’s debut album, which is also the opener, the first thing that popped into my head was singer Blondie and I wondered whether it was an English or a German band. Because this was not immediately obvious. Let’s Get Lost‘ combines strong distorted guitar riffs with vintage sound, clear gentle vocals and a chorus that quickly sticks in the ear.
The listener is partly transported to the glam rock era of the 70s. But you shouldn’t categorise music and ‚Gong Wah‘ are not completely at home in any genre, because they seem to bring in their own fresh wind.
Almost three years ago, singer Inga Nelke and the two guitarists Thorsten Dohle and Felix Will met for a session in their Cologne rehearsal room and, accompanied by a drum machine, rather coincidentally created a sound they call Fuzz Wave.
Gong Wah performed with the effective vocals of Inga Nelke and the guitar sound of Thorsten Dohle and Felix Will , which was dominated by a chain of effects machines. The drums and bass were played from an 80s tape deck at this time. Unfortunately, during a gig at the end of 2018, the tape deck with the backing tracks was completely destroyed. The later Gong Wah bassist Giso Simon and drummer Nima Davari were in the audience during this scenario. Since then, both have been an integral part of the band.
‚I Hate You‘ is a rocking number with psychedelic elements. The riffs on „Sugar & Lies“ are clearly reminiscent of the ‚Status Quo‘ hymn ‚Whatever you want‘ and you get to feel effective boogie rock. Softer tones should not be missing on this album, of course, and these are intoned on “Contaminated Concrete‘. ‚Just Sayin“ has hypnotic nuances.
Gong Wah skilfully combine krautrock, new wave and psychedelic rock with each other.
The CD’s of the debut album are limited to 500 copies and the vinyl version is limited to 300 copies. So you have to be quick!
