Im vergangenen Jahr trat Jayce Lewis im Vorprogramm von Gary Numans „European Savage Tour“ auf. Sein aktuelles Album „Million Part 1“ ist bereits seine dritte Veröffentlichung. Seine Klänge sind düster, rockig und mit elektronischen Einflüssen gemischt. In Deutschland ist er noch nicht allzu bekannt, dabei ist der aus Wales stammende Musiker ein wahres Multitalent. Er ist unter anderem Sänger, Drummer, Gitarrist und produziert auch andere Künstler und Bands in seinem eigenen Studio in Wales. „Million Part 2“ ist gerade in der Entstehung. Ich durfte Jayce Lewis einige Fragen stellen. Dabei kam ein wirklich sehr informatives und ausführliches Interview hervor, welches ihr im Folgenden lesen könnt:

Wie bist du zur Musik gekommen und welche Künstler hörst du privat?

Jayce Lewis: ,,Als ich sehr jung war, sah ich „Live Aid“ im Fernsehen, die Band Queen spielte und ich war von Anfang an fasziniert. Ich hatte eine seltsame Kindheit – mit Psychologen und Sprachtherapeuten. Ich wurde von ihrer Musik sofort angezogen. Privat höre ich eine große Menge an Musik – von Electronic bis Metal, Klassik bis hin zu Popmusik. Es gibt so viel da draußen.“

Wie würdest du deine Musik beschreiben? Bist du auch von anderen Musikern inspiriert worden?

Jayce Lewis: ,,Meine Musik ist mit vielen Arten verschmolzen. Ich habe eine Menge Einflüsse. Ich würde sagen, inspiriert wurde ich am meisten von Acts wie „Fear Factory“, „Mike Oldfield“, die frühen „Depeche Mode“, „Royksopp“, „Nero“ und so weiter.“

In deinem Video „Shields“ hatte David „Dave“ Prowse (Schauspieler Darth Vader) einen Gastauftritt. Er war auch dein Manager für einige Jahre. Wo hast du ihn zum ersten Mal getroffen und wie ist die Zusammenarbeit entstanden?

Jayce Lewis: ,,Ich und Dave haben uns vor langer Zeit auf einer Star Wars Convention kennengelernt. Wir wurden fast sofort Freunde, als ich Schlagzeuger war und bei einer Firma namens ,,Pinnacle Entertainment“ unterschrieb. Dave fragte mich, ob ich ihn als Manager involvieren oder ihn für irgendetwas administrieren wolle. Zu diesem Zeitpunkt konnte ich noch nicht voraussehen, ob es funktionieren würde,  aber ich dachte mir –  Darth Vader als Bandmanager, das ist nichts, was ich vorher schon einmal gesehen habe und wobei ich nie gedacht hätte, dass ich ihn jemals in der Band haben würde. Es hat wirklich gut geklappt und es hat großen Spaß gemacht.“

Letztes Jahr warst du der Opening Act von Gary Numans „European Savage Tour“. Außerdem habt ihr den Song „Redesign“ aufgenommen. Wo hast du ihn zum ersten Mal getroffen und ist er ein Vorbild für dich?

Jayce Lewis: ,,Ja, es ist das zweite Mal, dass ich und Gary zusammen auf Tour gegangen sind. Und es ist immer ein Vergnügen. Ich liebe ihn und seine Frau Gemma, sie sind so tolle Menschen und wir haben viel Spaß. Das erste Mal haben wir uns bei einem ,,Depeche Mode“ Konzert getroffen. Ich bin gut mit Dave Gahans Bruder befreundet und wurde eingeladen, sie zum ersten Mal zu sehen. Gary und seine Frau saßen direkt vor mir, ich konnte mir also nicht die Gelegenheit entgehen lassen ihn anzusprechen. Wir redeten über Flugzeuge. Die ganze Nacht! Wir sind seither gute Freunde geworden und ich habe viel Respekt vor ihm. Ich würde nicht sagen, dass er ein Einfluss oder ein Vorbild in meiner Musikproduktion ist, aber er ist eine echte Inspiration, wie ich mit einigen Dingen in diesem Geschäft umgehen kann. Wir reden dann darüber, was in der Musikindustrie vor sich geht, über Probleme und auch über persönliche Angelegenheiten. Es ist eine besondere Beziehung.“

Manche sehen dich als eine junge Version von Gary Numan. Fühlst du dich durch diesen Vergleich geschmeichelt oder fühlst du dich damit eher unwohl?

Jayce Lewis: ,,Haha, ja, das habe schon oft gehört. Ich denke, es gibt Ähnlichkeiten in der Art und Weise, wie ich aussehe, und dass ich Synthesizer in meiner Musik verwende, aber ich denke, es endet dort. Ich fühle mich geschmeichelt, Punkt, aber versuche auch, jeden daran zu erinnern, dass es nur EINEN Gary Numan gibt, und er ist am Leben und gesund und tourt die ganze Zeit. Ich fühle mich deswegen nicht unwohl. Es bringt mich allerdings ein wenig zum Lachen.“

Auf deinem aktuellen Album „Million Part 1“ hat Queen’s Brian May einen Gastauftritt auf „Nemesis“ ist Roger Taylor, ebenfalls Queen, vertreten. Hast du eine besondere Verbindung zur der Band Queen?

Jayce Lewis: ,,Ja, auf diese Zusammenarbeit bin ich wirklich besonders stolz. Es ist merkwürdig, weil alles genau wegen dieser Band geschah, und jetzt viele Jahre später, schreitet es weiter voran. Ich habe mit beiden weiter an meiner Musik gearbeitet. Es ist ziemlich verrückt,  denn sie haben einen großen Einfluss auf meinen Entschluss, Musiker zu sein. Ich fühle mich sehr gut damit.“

Du bist dabei ,,Million Part 2″ aufzunehmen. Was kann der Hörer bei deinem nächsten Album erwarten und wann wird das es veröffentlicht?

Jayce Lewis: ,,Ja, es ist fast schon fertig. Ich würde sagen, dass man genauso viel wie bei Teil 1 erwarten kann, größere Melodien vielleicht und ein bisschen sanfter als die Erste. Die Wahrheit ist aber, dass alles zusammen geschrieben wurde. Ich hatte einfach noch nicht alle Vocals für Teil 2 aufgenommen. Also freue ich mich darauf, diese zu beenden.“

Gehst du mit deinem neuen Album auf Tour? Kommst du dieses Jahr mit deiner Show nach Deutschland?

Jayce Lewis: ,,Ja, wahrscheinlich werde ich meine eigene UK-Headline-Tour machen und schauen, ob ich mit einem anderen Act zusammen durch Deutschland touren kann. Das wäre großartig!“

Gibt es etwas, das du mit Deutschland verbindest?

Jayce Lewis: ,,Ich LIEBE Deutschland, ich habe viele, viele Freunde dort. Einschließlich der Rammstein Jungs. Es macht immer Spaß, wenn wir uns treffen.“

Last year Jayce Lewis was the supporting act of Gary Numan’s „European Savage Tour“. His current album „Million Part 1“ is already his third album. His sounds are dark, rocky and mixed with electronic influences. In Germany, he is not yet well known, although the welsh musician is a true multi talent. He is a singer, drummer, guitarist and produces other artists and bands in his own studio in Wales. „Million Part 2“ is currently in the making. I was allowed to ask Jayce Lewis some questions, and a very informative and detailed interview came to pass, which you can read below:

How did you get into music and which artists do you listen privately?

Jayce Lewis: ,,When I was a very young, I saw „Live Aid“ on TV, the band „Queen“ were playing and I was captivated from the word go, I had somewhat of a odd childhood – with child psychologists, speech therapists and all, and never had I ever been so drawn in by something like that. Privately I listen to a varied amount of music. From electronic to metal, classical to pop music. There’s so much out there now.“

How would you describe your music? Are you inspired by other musicians as well?

Jayce Lewis: ,,My music is fused of all sorts really. I have a lot of influences. I would say mostly acts like „Fear Factory“, „Mike Oldfield“, the early „Depeche Mode“, „Royksopp“, „Nero“ and so on.“

In your video „Shields“ David „Dave“ Prowse (Artist: Darth Vader) had a guest appearance. He was also your manager for a few years. How did you meet him and how did the collaboration come about?

Jayce Lewis: ,,Me and Dave met at a Star Wars convention a long while ago. We became friends almost immediately, at the time I was a drummer and signed to a company called ,,Pinnacle Entertainment“. Dave throughout the early days asked if I wanted him involved as a manager or to administrate anything, which at the time I couldn’t see working but eventually thinking – Darth Vader as a band manager, that’s not something I have seen before and never thought I´d ever have in band. It worked out really well, and was great fun.“

Last year you were the opening act for Gary Numans „European Savage Tour“. Also you recorded both the song „Redesign“. Where did you first meet and is he a role model for you?

Jayce Lewis: ,,Yeah, its actually the second time me and Gary have toured together, its always a pleasure. I love him and his wife Gemma, they are such awesome people and great fun. We first met at a Depeche Mode concert. I am good friends with Dave Gahan’s brother, and so was invited to go see them for the first time. Gary and his wife sat right in front of me, so I couldn’t resist to want to speak with Gary and talk about planes. ALL NIGHT! We have since become great friends, and I have so much respect for him. I wouldn’t say he is an influence or role model in ways of my music making, but he is a real influence on how to handle things in this business, and I am glad I have him to bounce issues with, we often speak about whats going on with the industry and our personal things. Its a special relationship.“

Some see you as a young version of Gary Numan. Are you flattered by this comparison or are you rather uncomfortable?

Jayce Lewis: ,,Haha, yeah I have heard this many times over. I think I can see the resemblance in maybe the way I look, and that I use synths in my music, but I think it ends there. I am flattered to a point, but also try to remind everyone that there is only one Gary Numan, and he is alive and well and touring all the time. It doesn’t make me uncomfortable at all. It makes me laugh a little, I guess.“

On your current album Million Part 1, Queen’s Brian May has made a guest appearance. On „Nemesis“ Roger Taylor is represented. Do you have a special connection to the band Queen?

Jayce Lewis: ,,Yeah, its my proudest collaboration actually, its strange because this all happened because of that band, and now moving forward many years, I have worked with both of them with my music. Its quite crazy. They are a huge influence on me wanting to be a musician so… I feel very accomplished with it all.“

You are about to record Million Part 2. What should the listener expect from your next album and when will the album be released?

Jayce Lewis: ,,Yeah, its almost finished actually. I would say that they can expect much the same as Part 1, bigger melodies maybe and a little mellower than the first. Truth is that, it was all written together. I just hadn’t done any vocals to Part 2, so looking forward to finishing that off.“

Are you going on tour with your new album? Are you coming to Germany with your show this year?

Jayce Lewis : ,,I will yes, most likely I will do my own UK Headline Tour and perhaps see if I can go out with another act in Germany, that would be awesome.“

Is there something you associate with Germany?

Jayce Lewis: ,,I LOVE Germany, I have many, many friends there… including the „Rammstein“ guys, who are always good fun to hang with when ever we meet up.“
