Synth-Pop trifft auf Dark Rock

Die britischen Bands Empathy Test und Auger begeisterten das Publikum im Hamburger Club Bahnhof Pauli auf Anhieb

Hamburg. Am 2. September 2023 war es soweit. Der Club Bahnhof Pauli in Hamburg öffnete um 18:30 Uhr seine Türen für das Empathy Test (Special Guests: Auger) Konzert. Ursprünglich sollte das Konzert im Apollo in Elmshorn stattfinden. Da dies dann leider nicht mehr möglich war, wurde kurzfristig eine neue Location gesucht, da weder Empathy Test noch Auger das Konzert absagen wollten. Mit dem Club Bahnhof Pauli wurde dann schnell ein Ersatz gefunden. Pünktlich um 19:15Uhr betraten Auger Sänger und Gitarrist Kyle Blaqk und Schlagzeuger Marcus Carter die Bühne. (Aktuelles Album: Nighthawks) Alle, die meine Angrabyte Journalism Webseite kennen, wissen dass ich schon viel über Auger berichtet habe und auch in der Vergangenheit ein Interview mit Kyle Blaqk geführt habe. Um so mehr hat es mich gefreut, dass diese nun in Hamburg spielten und ich Auger zum ersten Mal live erleben durfte. Mit dem Intro von Good Bye und dem Track Sound Of The Machine leiteten beide die Show ein. Es folte ein 40 minütiger Auftritt von Auger. Die Hamburger Zuschauer waren absolut gegeistert und sangen sogar textsicher einige Auger Songs mit. Zudem wurde gejubelt und geklatscht. Kyle Blaqk interagierte auch super mit dem Publikum. Ich vermute, dass My Guardian durch seine einprägende Melodie und Refrain ein absoluter Publikumsmagnet ist. Den neusten Track Before It Began hatte die Band auch mit Gepäck, welcher am Vortag dem 1. September 2023 erschien. Before it Began ist meiner Meinung nach ein etwas untypischer Auger Song, der mit Melodic Rock, Dark Rock und Metal mehrere Musikstile kombiniert. Allerdings hat Before it Began fast keinerlei elektronische Elemente mehr, welche man eigentlich vorher von Band aus Nord-England gewohnt ist. Was nun aber nichts Negatives bedeuten soll, denn das Lied ist ein echter Ohrwurm. Oxygen war der letzte Song von der Setliste an diesem Abend. Dieser stammt aus dem aktuellen Album Nighthawks.

Nach einer kurzen Pause von circa 10-15 Minuten ertönte der Song Monsters von Empathy Test (Isaac Howlett (Gesang), David Leisser (Schlagzeug) und Nadine Green (Keyboard)) . Monsers ist mein persönlicher Favorit von Empathy Test. Sänger Isaac Howlett brauchte einen zweiten Anlauf, um den Song zu beginnen, was er aber mit Charme und einem Lächeln gekonnt überspielte. Weiter ging es mit Empty Handed, einem Track aus dem aktuellem Album Monsters. Isaac Howlett kommunizierte mit dem Publikum, sowie ich es schon im vergangenem Jahr in der Markthalle bemerkt hatte, als Empathy Test dort spielten. Der Frontmann hat eine sympathische Art an sich und liebt es, das Publikum mit einzubeziehen. Weitere Hightlights waren Lieder wie Bare My Soul, Demons und Losing Touch. Die Synth-Pop Band aus der UK hatte mit insgesamt 20 Songs eine große Bandbreite aus all ihren drei Alben (Monsters, Safe From Harm, Losing Touch) mit an Bord. Die Zuschauer waren hingerissen und klatschten und wollten natürlich Zugaben hören. Nach einem kurzem Break kam die Band wieder auf die Bühne und gab Throwing Stones zum Besten. Danach erwähnte Howlett, dass leider nur noch sieben Minuten für die Songs Love Moves und Here Is the Place seien, da nach dem Konzert noch ein Festival in der Location stattfindet und die Zeit leider knapp werde. Er ließ das Publikum für ein Lied entscheiden, dieses mochte ich allerdings nicht auf nur einen der Tracks festlegen. Isaac Howlett entschloss sich Love Moves und Here Is The Place in Kürze der Zeit zu singen. Was ihm auch mit Bravour gelang, ohne dass es abgehetzt klang.

Leider hat die Lichttechnik an diesem Abend schon etwas gestört, so dass ich schon von Anfang an teilweise oft geblendet war. Zudem passte die Lichtfolge nicht zu den Songs. Das Problem mit der Lichttechnik hatte sich auch beim Empathy Test Auftritt bedauerlicherweise nicht verbessert gehabt.

The British bands Empathy Test and Auger thrilled the audience at Hamburg’s Club Bahnhof Pauli right away

Hamburg. On 2^nd September 2023, the time had come. The Club Bahnhof Pauli in Hamburg opened its doors at 6:30 pm for the Empathy Test (Special Guests: Auger) concert. Originally the concert was supposed to take place at the Apollo in Elmshorn. Unfortunately this was not possible anymore, so a new location was searched at short notice, because neither Empathy Test nor Auger wanted to cancel the event. With the Club Bahnhof Pauli a replacement was found quickly. Punctually at 7:15 pm Auger singer and guitarist Kyle Blaqk and drummer Marcus Carter entered the stage. (Current album: Nighthawks) All of you who know my Angrabyte Journalism website know that I have already reported a lot about Auger and also did an interview with Kyle Blaqk in the past. So I was even more pleased that they now played in Hamburg and that I was able to experience Auger live for the first time. With the intro of Good Bye and the track Sound Of The Machine both started the show. A 40 minute performance of Auger followed. The Hamburg audience was absolutely thrilled and even sang along with some Auger songs. There was also cheering and clapping. Kyle Blaqk also interacted super with the audience. I guess My Guardian is an absolute crowd magnet because of its catchy melody and chorus. The band also had the latest track Before It Began with them, which was released the day before on 1 September 2023. In my opinion, Before it Began is a somewhat untypical Auger song that combines several musical styles with melodic rock, dark rock and metal. However, Before it Began has almost no electronic elements, which one is used to from bands from Northern England. But that doesn’t mean anything negative, because the song is a real catchy tune. Oxygen was the last song on the setlist this evening. It was from the current album Nighthawks.

After a short break of about 10-15 minutes, the song Monsters by Empathy Test (Isaac Howlett (vocals), David Leisser (drums) and Nadine Green keyboard) started. Monsters is my personal favourite from Empathy Test. Singer Isaac Howlett needed a second attempt to start the song, but he skilfully covered this with charm and a smile. The show continued with Empty Handed, a track from the current album Monsters. Isaac Howlett communicated with the audience, as I had already noticed last year in the Markthalle when Empathy Test played there. The frontman has a likeable manner and loves to involve the audience. Other highlights included songs like Bare My Soul, Demons and Losing Touch. With a total of 20 songs, the synth-pop band from the UK had a wide range of songs from all three of their albums (Monsters, Safe From Harm, Losing Touch) on board. The audience was enraptured and clapped and of course wanted to hear encores. After a short break, the band came back on stage and performed Throwing Stones. Afterwards, Howlett mentioned that unfortunately there were only seven minutes left for the songs Love Moves and Here Is the Place, as there was another festival at the venue after the concert and time was unfortunately running out. He let the audience decide on a song, however, the audience did not like to settle on just one of the tracks. Isaac Howlett decided to sing Love Moves and Here Is The Place in short order. Which he did brilliantly, without sounding rushed.

Unfortunately, the lighting technology was a bit disturbing that evening, so that I was often dazzled right from the start. In addition, the lighting sequence did not match the songs. The problem with the lighting technology had regrettably not improved at the Empathy Test gig either.
