Konzertrezension von Christina Angrabeit

Am 18. Juni 2022 war es endlich soweit. Nachdem ich 2020 eine Rezension über das dritte Empathy Test Album ‚Monsters‘ geschrieben habe, hatte ich endlich die Gelegenheit die Synth-Pop Band einmal live zu sehen. Leider musste das Konzert in Hamburg mehrfach aufgrund der Corona Pandemie verschoben werden. Es war mein zweiter Besuch in der Markthalle Hamburg und ich möchte gleich mit erwähnen, das Personal dort ist sehr freundlich und hilfsbereit. Bei jeder Frage stehen diese einem mit Rat und Tat zur Seite. Wer noch eine Karte für das Konzert ergattern wollte, musste schnell sein, denn die Abendskasse war schnell ausverkauft.

Um 20 Uhr startete die italienische (aus Napoli stammende) Dark-Wave, Post-Punk Band Hapax (Sänger und Bassist Michelle Mozillo, Gitarrist Diego Cardone und Schlagzeuger Fransesco Giuliano) mit ihrem Song ‚Elegy‘ aus dem Album ‚Monade‘. Der Sound ist von Hapax ist sehr melancholisch und tiefgehend. Die Stimme des Sängers erinnert mich etwas an die Stimmfarbe von Dave Gahan von Depeche Mode und an Kyle Blaque von Auger. Ich hätte zuerst nicht erwartet, dass der Support Act an diesem Abend gleich 13 Songs spielt. Die aktuelleste Ep von Hapax heißt ‚Exile‘ und ist 2021 erschienen. Aus dieser EP haben die Jungs ‚Silvery Track‘, ‚Exile‘ und ‚A different Blue‘ zum Besten. Mein persönlicherf Favorit war ‚Survive The Night‘ aus dem Album ‚Cave‘ an dem Abend. Dieser Song hat etwas Mystisches und erinnert mich an Nächte nach einer Trennung in denen man Liebeskummer hat und man diese Gefühle wie eine Achterbahn erlebt und sich hilflos fühlt.

Kurz darauf enterten gegen 21 Uhr Empathy Test (Sänger Isaac Howlett, Keyboarder Oliver Marson und Schlagzeuger David Leisser) die Bühne und der Song ‚Monsters‘ ertönte. Monsters ist einer meiner Lieblingssongs. Live wirkt die Stimme von Isaac Howlett ähnlich wie in meiner damaligen Rezension zum Monsters Album. Seine Stimme besticht durch Sanftheit, Gefühlsbetontheit und sie geht einem durch Mark und Bein. Das heißt das Gänsehautfeeling ist hier eindeutig vorprorammiert.

Howlett wirbelte wie ein Wirbelwind und voller Energie über die Bühne. Die meisten Songs, wie unter anderem ‚Empty Handed‘, ‚Making Worlds‘ und ‚Incubation Song‘ stammten natürlich aus dem dritten Album ‚Monsters‘, da es sich um die Monsters Tour 2022 handelte, aber es waren auch von den Vörgängeralben (‚Losing Touch‘ und ‚Safe From Harm‘) Songs mit auf der Setlist. Von der Platte ‚Safe From Harm‘ waren unter anderem ‚Bare My Soul‘, ‚Seeing Stars‘ und ‚Demons‘ auf der Setlist. Von der Scheibe ‚Losing Touch‘ waren ‚Kirilee‘, ‚Losing Touch‘ und ‚Here is The Place‘ mit von der Partie. Immer wieder kommunizierte Sänger Isaac Howlett mit dem Publikum und es entstanden sogar Konversationen zwischen ihm und den Fans zwischen den einzelnen Liedern. Was ich aber am Allerschönsten und am Rührensten fand, als Isaac Howlett zu den Zuschauern sagte: Es passiert derzeit so viel Sch….. dort draußen. Dass ihr alle gekommen seid, zeigt mir, dass noch Liebe und somit Hoffnung für diese Welt besteht.“ Am Ende des Konzertes kletterte er über die Absperrung und umarmte jede einzelne Seele, die im Zuschauerraum war. Selten habe ich eine solche Herzlichkeit und Interaktion mit dem Publikum seitens eines Sängers erlebt. Ich finde, jeder sollte einmal ein Empathy Test Konzert erlebt haben. Wenn sich das nächste Mal die Gelegenheit bietet, bin ich natürlich wieder mit dabei.

“There is still love and hope for this world“

On June the 18th 2022, the time had finally come. After writing a review of the third Empathy Test album ‚Monsters‘ in 2020, I finally had the opportunity to see the synth pop band live. Unfortunately, the concert in Hamburg had to be postponed several times due to the Corona Pandemic. It was my second visit to the Markthalle Hamburg and I would like to mention that the staff there are very friendly and helpful. They are always there to help with any question. If you wanted to get hold of a ticket for the concert, you had to be quick, because the evening box office was quickly sold out.

At 8 pm, the Italian (Napoli-based) dark-wave, post-punk band Hapax (singer and bassist Michelle Mozillo, guitarist Diego Cardone and drummer Fransesco Giuliano) started with their song ‚Elegy‘ from the album ‚Monade‘. The sound of Hapax is very melancholic and deep. The singer’s voice reminds me a bit of the vocal colour of Dave Gahan from Depeche Mode and of Kyle Blaque from Auger. At first I didn’t expect the support act to play 13 songs this evening. Hapax’s most recent EP is called ‚Exile‘ and was released in 2021. From this EP the guys played ‚Silvery Track‘, ‚Exile‘ and ‚A different Blue‘. My personal favourite was ‚Suvive The Night‘ from the album ‚Cave‘ that night. This song has something mystical about it and reminds me of nights after a break-up when you are heartbroken and you experience these feelings like a rollercoaster and feel helpless.

Shortly afterwards, around 9 pm, Empathy Test (singer Isaac Howlett, keyboardist Oliver Marson and drummer David Leisser) entered the stage and the song ‚Monsters‘ rang out. ‚Monsters‘ is one of my favourite songs. Live, Isaac Howlett’s voice has a similar effect as in my review of the ‚Monsters‘ album at the time. His voice is gentle and emotional and it goes right through the heart and soul. That means that the goosebump feeling is clearly pre-programmed here.

Howlett whirled around the stage like a whirlwind and full of energy. Most of the songs, such as ‚Empty Handed‘, ‚Making Worlds‘ and ‚Incubation Song‘, were of course from the third album ‚Monsters‘, due to the ‚Monsters Tour‘ 2022, but there were also songs from the previous albums (‚Losing Touch‘ and ‚Safe From Harm‘) on the setlist. From the ‚Safe From Harm‘ album, the setlist included ‚Bare My Soul‘, ‚Seeing Stars‘ and ‚Demons‘ amongst others. From the record Losing Touch, Kirilee, ‚Losing Touch‘ and ‚Here Is The Place‘ were part of the set. Again and again, singer Isaac Howlett communicated with the audience and there were even conversations between him and the fans between the individual songs. But what I found most beautiful and touching was when Isaac Howlett said to the audience: „There’s so much shit happening out there right now. The fact that you all came to this show, shows me that there is still love and therefore hope for this world.“ At the end of the concert he climbed over the barrier and hugged every single soul that was in the auditorium. Rarely have I experienced such warmth and interaction with the audience on the part of a singer. I think everyone should have experienced an Empathy Test concert once. If the opportunity arises next time, I will of course be there again.
