Ein Künstler ohne Starallüren

James Kennedy ist Sänger, Produzent und Frontmann der Alternative Rock Band ,,Kyshera“.  Als Künstler hat er bisher drei ,,Kyshera“ Alben und drei Solo Platten geschrieben und produziert, die alle über sein eigenes Plattenlabel ,,Konic Records“ veröffentlicht wurden. Sein aktuellstes Album heißt ,,Home“ und ist Ende März 2017 erschienen. „Home“ landete unter den Top 50 der Bestseller Alben bei Amazon. In seiner gesamten Karriere hat James Kennedy eine breite Palette an Musik geschrieben, darunter Alternative / Progressive / Experimental Rock, Akustik Balladen, Orchestermusik, extreme experimentelle elektronische Musik und melodischen Mainstream Pop / Rock. Vor kurzem war er auf ,,Misfits Tour“ durch die UK und die Niederlande. Was er mir über seine Karriere sowie seiner Tour erzählte und warum er die deutschen Straßen liebt, erfahrt ihr im folgenden Interview.

Im Moment bist du auf großer ,,Misfits Tour“, tourst durch Großbritannien und die Niederlande. Ich habe gelesen, dass du auf dem Weg nach Schottland im Stau stecken geblieben bist und es ging nicht voran? Ich hoffe du bist noch rechtzeitig angekommen?

James Kennedy: ,,Ha ha! Ja, zum Glück bin ich rechtzeitig angekommen – aber nur gerade so eben! Die Straßen im Vereinigten Königreich sind eine absolute Schande – ich bin in ganz Europa gefahren und habe noch nie etwas gesehen, das dem absoluten Horror der britischen Straßen so nahe kommt. Das Fahren überall in Großbritannien zu jeder Tages- und Nachtzeit wird fast unmöglich.“

Deine Solo Tournee heißt ,,Misfits“ Tour. Gibt es dafür einen besonderen Grund?

James Kennedy: ,,Nun, weil meine ,,Fanbase“ (mangels eines besseren Wortes) ,,Misfits“ heißt, nach meinem gleichnamigen Song. Bei der Tour ging es vor allem darum, meine ,,Fans“ von Angesicht zu Angesicht zu treffen und eine kleine, intime, persönliche Art von Performance für sie zu machen, anstatt eine größere Tour zu machen, bei der man niemanden trifft. Ich wollte allen persönlich für ihre großartige Unterstützung danken, also war die Tour FÜR die ,,Misfits“, deshalb habe ich sie die ,,Misfits Tour“ genannt.“

Leider ist im Rahmen deiner ,,Misfits Tour“ kein Konzert in Deutschland geplant. Beabsichtigst du in Zukunft in Deutschland aufzutreten und deine Musik dort bekannter zu machen?

James Kennedy: ,,Ich würde gern! Ich liebe Deutschland und die Deutschen sind einfach die Besten! Dort gibt es auch keine Probleme mit den Straßen! Ich bin in Deutschland mit ,,Kyshera“ aufgetreten, aber nie als Solokünstler, also würde ich gerne irgendwann dort meine Soloshow machen! Hoffentlich kann ich das bald tun!“

Du bist ein Sänger, Songwriter, Produzent, Frontmann der alten Rockband Kyshera und Besitzer eines Plattenlabels. Ist es schwierig, alles unter einen Hut zu bekommen?

James Kennedy: ,,Total! Es ist ein Vollzeitjob. Ich sehe es nicht als Arbeit an, da ich das Glück habe, meinen Lebensunterhalt mit dem, was ich liebe zu bestreiten und ich keinen Chef oder Plattenfirma habe, der / die mir vorschreibt, was ich zu tun habe. Nicht alle Aspekte sind spaßig oder einfach, aber selbst die administrative Seite der Dinge ist eine Notwendigkeit, um als Künstler frei und unabhängig zu sein.“

Bevorzugst als Solokünstler Musik zu machen oder mit deiner Band Kyshera?

James Kennedy: ,,Es sind beide sehr unterschiedliche Erfahrungen. In einer Band zu spielen bringt die Kameradschaft des Seins mit den Jungs und ein Lachen mit sich, während man alleine ein freier Geist ist, der nur mit minimalem Gepäck und Bindungen herumreist. Beides ist auf unterschiedliche Weise cool!“

Dein Solo Album „Home“ wurde am 31. März 2017 veröffentlicht. Es erreichte die Top 50 der Bestsellerliste bei Amazon. Erzähl mir etwas mehr. Wie war es, an dem Album zu arbeiten und hast du den Erfolg erwartet?

James Kennedy: ,,Das Album hat viel Spaß gemacht! Das Ganze wurde in drei Monaten geschrieben und aufgenommen, was für ein ganzes Album sehr schnell ist! Der Prozess war sehr natürlich und ich schrieb direkt aus dem Herzen, ohne Filter, so dass der Prozess sehr glatt und einfach war. Es ist ein Tagebuch einer ganz bestimmten Zeit in meinem Leben und wird als solches immer einen besonderen Platz in meinem Herzen haben. Ich habe nicht erwartet, dass das Album der Erfolg wird, der es dann wurde! Es scheint bei vielen Leuten wirklich Resonanz gefunden zu haben und ich bin wirklich berührt von den Botschaften der Leute, wie Songs von dem Album auf Hochzeiten und Beerdigungen gespielt wurden oder Menschen durch ihre eigenen schlechten Zeiten geholfen haben.“

Welcher Song wird deine nächste Single sein?

James Kennedy: ,, Es wird jetzt keine Singles mehr geben. Vielleicht gibt es noch ein paar Videos mit Songs aus dem Album, aber es gab vier Singles und eine Tour, also denke ich, dass das wahrscheinlich genug ist. Zeit, jetzt am Nächsten zu arbeiten!“

Bis jetzt hast du auch Songs für andere Musiker geschrieben. Kannst du einen kleinen Ausschnitt davon geben, von welchen Künstlern es war?

James Kennedy: ,,Die meiste Musik, die ich für andere geschrieben habe, war für Werbungen und TV-Shows, aber ich habe auch für den ,,Military Wives Choir“, die ,,Tenovus Cancer Charity Choirs“, ,,Katie Waissel“ und viel für den Produzenten ,,Greg Haver“ getextet und auch für andere verschiedene Projekte.“

Wie hältst du deine Stimme fit?

James Kennedy: ,,Ich weiß es nicht! Es geht einfach weiter! Ich kann stundenlang singen und sie wird nie müde! Ich bin aber ziemlich vernünftig, ich achte darauf, was ich vor einer Show esse und trinke, ich wärme mich immer auf und trinke bis nach dem Gig nichts als Wasser. Abgesehen davon, habe ich keine schlauen Tricks oder irgendetwas, nur gesunden Menschenverstand, nehme ich an!“

Was fällt dir spontan zu Deutschland ein?

James Kennedy: ,,Lustige, freundliche und intelligente Leute (mit guten Straßen!).“

An artist without star airs

James Kennedy is a singer, producer and frontman of the alternative rock band „Kyshera.“ As an artist, he has written and produced three „Kyshera“ albums and three solo records, all released through his own record label „Konic Records“. His latest album is called „Home“ and was released in late March 2017. „Home“ was among the top 50 best sellers on Amazon. Throughout his career, James Kennedy has written a wide range of music, including alternative / progressive / experimental rock, acoustic ballads, orchestral music, extreme experimental electronic music and melodic mainstream pop / rock. Recently he was on „Misfits Tour“ through the UK and the Netherlands. What he told me about his career, his solo tour and why he loves the German roads, you will read in the following interview.

Right now you’re on big Misfits Tour and touring the UK and the Netherlands. I red that you was on the way to Scotland you got stuck in a traffic jam and it was not progressing? I hope you arrived in time?

James Kennedy: ,,Ha ha! Yes, luckily I did arrive in time – but only just! The roads in the UK are an absolute disgrace – I have driven all over Europe and I have never seen anything remotely close to the level of absolute horror of UK roads. Driving anywhere in the UK at any time of day or night is becoming almost an impossibility.“

Why your solo tour is called „Misfits“ Tour? Is there a special reason?

James Kennedy: ,,Well it’s because my ,,fanbase“ (for want of a better word) are called ,,Misfits“, after my song of the same name. The tour was mostly about meeting my ‚fans‘ face to face and doing a small, intimate, personal type of performance for them, rather than a larger scale tour where you never get to meet anyone. I wanted to thank everyone personally for all of their amazing support, so the tour was FOR the ,,Misfits“, so that’s why i called it the Misfits Tour.

Unfortunately, there is no concert planned in germany as part of your tour. Do you intend to perform in germany in the future and make your music more well known there?

James Kennedy: ,,I would LOVE to! I love Germany & the German people are just the best! No problems with the roads there either! I have performed in Germany with Kyshera but never as a solo artist, so I would absolutely love to come & do my solo show there sometime! Hopefully we can make that happen soon!“

You are a singer, songwriter, producer, frontman of the old rock band Kyshera and owner of a record label. Is it difficult to do it all in time?

James Kennedy: ,,Totally! It’s a full time lifestyle but I don’t think of any of it as ,,work“, as I’m lucky to get to do what I love for a living and I don’t have a boss or a record Label telling me what to do. Not all aspects of it are fun or easy but even the admin side of things is just a neccessary extension of being able to be free and independent as an artist.“

Do you prefer to do music as a solo artist or with your band Kyshera?

James Kennedy: ,,They are both very different experiences. Playing in a band brings with it the cameraderie of being with the boys & having a laugh whereas being solo, you’re a free spirit just travelling around with minimal equipment & ties. So they’re both cool in different ways!“

Your solo album „Home“ was released on March 31, 2017. It reached the top 50 of the best seller list on Amazon. Tell me something more. how it was to work on the album and did you expect the success?

James Kennedy: ,,The album was great fun to make! The whole thing was written and recorded in three months, which is very quick for an entire album! The process was very natural & I just wrote directly from the heart, with no filter, so that made the process very smooth and simple. It is a journal of a very specific period in my life and as such, will always have a special place in my heart. I didn’t expect the album to be the success that it was at all! It seems to have really resonated with a lot of people and I’ve been genuinely touched by people’s messages of how songs from the album have been played at weddings & funerals, or helped people through their own bad spots.“

Which song will be your next single?

James Kennedy: ,,There won’t be any more singles from the album now. There may be some more videos using songs from the album but there have been four singles and a Tour, so I think that’s probably enough. Time to work on the next one now!“

So far you have also written songs for other musicians. Can you give a small excerpt of which artists it were?

James Kennedy: ,,Most of the music I have written for others, has been for adverts & TV shows but I have also written for the ,,Military Wives Choir“, the ,,Tenovus Cancer Charity Choirs“, ,,Katie Waissell“ and have done a lot of writing consultation for the producer ,,Greg Haver“ on various projects.“

How do you keep your voice fit?

James Kennedy: ,,I don’t know! It just keeps going! I can sing for hours & hours and it never gets tired! I’m pretty sensible though, I’m careful about what I eat & drink before a show, I always warm up & I drink nothing but water until after the gig. Apart from that, I don’t have any fancy tricks or anything, just common sense, I suppose!“

What comes to your mind spontaneously about germany?

James Kennedy: ,,Funny, friendly & intelligent people (with good roads!).“
