James Knights: Hi-NRG Performance in Marias Ballroom

Gemeinsam mit Chroma Neon und In Contact brachte James Knights mitreißenden 80er-Jahre-Spirit auf die Bühne

Hamburg-Harburg. Am Freitag, den 30. Januar 2026, war es endlich soweit: Das Knights-Konzert in Marias Ballroom im Rahmen der Supernatural Lover-Tour stand an. Da ich James Knights und seine Musik noch nicht kannte, war ich besonders neugierig, ihn persönlich kennenzulernen und seine Musik live zu erleben.

Trotz eisiger Temperaturen und Schnee kam ich sicher mit der Deutschen Bahn in Harburg an. Schon bei der Ankunft in Marias Ballroom war das Personal sehr herzlich und zuvorkommend. Der Ballroom war gut besucht und fast ausverkauft. Kaum hatte ich meine Jacke aufhängen wollen, ging die Backstage-Tür auf, und jemand hielt einen Zettel in der Hand und fragte, ob denn schon geöffnet sei. Später stellte ich fest, dass es sich um das Mitglied Martin Blue der Vorband Chroma Neon handelte, der mich angesprochen hatte – eine Erfahrung, die mir besonders in Erinnerung blieb. Außerdem habe ich gemerkt, dass es oft besonders spannend ist, die Musik der Vorbands und die Personen drum herum noch nicht zu kennen, denn so fällt die positive Überraschung live umso größer aus.

Pünktlich um 20:30 Uhr kamen Chroma Neon, ein Duo aus Kiel, auf die Bühne. Von Anfang an war ich von ihrer Stimme und Performance begeistert. Chroma Neon machen eine Mischung aus Musik der 80er-Jahre und elektronischer Musik. Besonders gefielen mir die Songs Welcome 2 the Future und die Single Nightshift aus dem aktuellen Album All We Have Is Now. Sänger Rik Blue erzählte mir kurz nach dem Auftritt, dass es die Band seit 2021 gibt. Ein weiteres Highlight ihres Auftritts war Don’t Break My Heart, ein Cover von Den Harrow.

Nach einer kurzen Umbauphase ging es um 21:30 Uhr mit dem Elektropop-Duo In Contact aus Hamburg weiter. Stefan Lee und Wolfgang Bier präsentierten unter anderem ihre aktuelle Single Shadow World sowie Fragile aus der gleichnamigen EP Shadow World. Im Hintergrund liefen durch einen Beamer Bilder zu den Songs, die deren Geschichten bildlich untermalten. Fireside, eine sehr gelungene Coverversion des Arctic Monkeys-Songs aus dem Jahr 2013, war ebenfalls auf der Setliste. Damit zeichnete sich bereits ab, dass dieser Konzertabend ganz im Zeichen starker Duo-Konstellationen stand.

Um 22:30 Uhr war es schließlich soweit: James Knights, den ich zuvor bereits im Publikum beim Begrüßen der Gäste gesehen hatte, stürmte nach dem Intro auf die Bühne, während Julz (Synths) von Capital X bereits Position bezogen hatte. Knights überzeugte mit einer energiegeladenen Bühnenpräsenz, die das Publikum sofort mitriss. Er startete mit dem Song Alligator aus seinem ersten Album Dollars & Cents, gefolgt von Knightmares, dem gleichzeitig ersten Song seines brandneuen Albums Supernatural Lover. Knightmares ist ein klares Wortspiel mit seinem Künstlernamen und zudem ein Ohrwurm-Garantie. Ganz in Schwarz gekleidet, mit schwarzem Handschuh an der rechten Hand, präsentierte Knights seine Songs mit enormer Intensität. Die zuvor gelesene Beschreibung als „Disco-Rampensau“ in seiner Promo erwies sich live als vollkommenn zutreffend. Vom neuen Album folgten auf der Setliste noch weitere neue Tracks wie Die for this Love, Bite the Night, Can’t Cry Any Longer, Goodbye Seventies und Light the Fuse. Somit war das gesamte neue Album (VÖ: 5. Februar 2026) vertreten, inklusive der aktuellen Single Supernatural Lover, allerdings mit Ausnahme des Songs D.G.D.

James Knights hatte während seines Auftritts versehentlich die Setliste zerstört, die auf dem Bühnenboden befestigt war, und konnte sie dementsprechend nicht mehr lesen. Spontan fragte er mich live vor dem Publikum: „Christina, would two more songs be okay?“ Ein unerwarteter und zugleich besonderer Moment – noch nie zuvor hatte mich ein Künstler während eines Konzerts persönlich angesprochen. Selbstverständlich stimmte ich zu.

Es folgte der Track Goodbye Seventies, eine sehr energiegeladene Version des Yazoo-Originals. Ich war und bin von dieser Interpretation sehr angetan – sogar so sehr, dass ich die Knights-Version stärker finde als das Original. Knights’ Version überzeugt mit authentischem 80er-Spirit; seine Stimme scheint wie geschaffen für diesen Stil. Fast vergisst man dabei, dass seine Musik aus den 2020er-Jahren stammt und nicht tatsächlich aus jener Dekade.

Gegen Ende wurde es emotional: Knights widmete den Abschlusssong Light the Fuse einem verstorbenen Freund von ihm und Julz. Er betonte, der Song stehe für Hoffnung und Zukunft statt für Rückblick – genau deshalb habe er ihn ausgewählt.

Gegen 23:45 Uhr endete der Abend. Dies war sehr bedauerlich, denn das Publikum – und auch ich – waren noch voll von der Energie des Auftritts: Knights’ Power ist schlicht ansteckend. Nach dem Konzert ergab sich zudem noch kurz eine persönliche Begegnung mit James Knights.

James Knights: Hi-NRG performance in Maria’s Ballroom

Together with Chroma Neon and In Contact, James Knights brought the rousing spirit of the 80s to the stage.

Hamburg-Harburg. On Friday, 30 January 2026, the time had finally come: the Knights concert at Marias Ballroom as part of the Supernatural Lover Tour was about to begin. As I was not yet familiar with James Knights and his music, I was particularly curious to meet him in person and experience his music live.

Despite freezing temperatures and snow, I arrived safely in Harburg with Deutsche Bahn. Upon arrival at Maria’s Ballroom, the staff were very warm and welcoming. The ballroom was well attended and almost sold out. No sooner had I hung up my coat than the backstage door opened and someone holding a piece of paper asked if the doors were open yet. Later, I realised that it was Martin Blue, a member of the opening act Chroma Neon, who had approached me – an experience that I remember particularly well. I also noticed that it is often particularly exciting not to know the music of the opening acts and the people around them, because then the positive surprise is all the greater when you see them live.

Chroma Neon, a duo from Kiel, came on stage right on time at 8:30 p.m. I was blown away by their vocals and performance right from the start. Chroma Neon mixes 80s music with electronic music. I especially liked the songs Welcome 2 the Future and the single Nightshift from their latest album All We Have Is Now. Shortly after the performance, singer Rik Blue told me that the band has been around since 2021. Another highlight of their performance was Don’t Break My Heart, a cover of Den Harrow.

After a brief set change, the evening continued at 9:30 p.m. with the electro-pop duo In Contact from Hamburg. Stefan Lee and Wolfgang Bier presented their current single Shadow World as well as Fragile from the EP of the same name, Shadow World. In the background, images accompanying the songs were projected by a beamer, visually illustrating their stories. Fireside, a very successful cover version of the Arctic Monkeys song from 2013, was also on the set list. From this point on, it was clear that this concert evening would be dominated by strong duo constellations.

At 10:30 p.m., the moment had finally come: James Knights, whom I had previously seen in the audience greeting guests, stormed onto the stage after the intro, while Julz (synths) from Capital X had already taken her position. Knights impressed with an energetic stage presence that immediately captivated the audience. He started with the song Alligator from his first album Dollars & Cents, followed by Knightmares, which is also the first song on his brand new albumSupernatural Lover. Knightmares is a clear play on words with his stage name and also guaranteed to be a catchy tune. Dressed entirely in black, with a black glove on his right hand, Knights presented his songs with enormous intensity. The description of him as a ‘Disco Rampensau’ in his promo proved to be completely accurate live. The set list included other new tracks from the album, such as Die For This Love, Bite the Night, Can’t Cry Any Longer, Goodbye Seventies and Light the Fuse. This meant that the entire new album (release date: 5 February 2026) was represented, including the current single Supernatural Lover, with the exception of the song D.G.D.

During his performance, James Knights accidentally destroyed the set list, which was attached to the stage floor, and was therefore unable to read it. Spontaneously, he asked me live in front of the audience: ‘Christina, would two more songs be okay?’ It was an unexpected and special moment – never before had an artist addressed me personally during a concert. Of course, I agreed.

This was followed by the track Goodbye Seventies, a very energetic version of the Yazoo original. I was and still am very impressed by this interpretation – so much so that I find the Knights version stronger than the original. Knights‘ version convinces with authentic 80s spirit; his voice seems tailor-made for this style. It almost makes you forget that his music is from the 2020s and not actually from that decade.

Towards the end, things got emotional: Knights dedicated the final song, Light the Fuse, to a friend of his and Julz who had passed away. He emphasised that the song stood for hope and the future rather than looking back – which was precisely why he had chosen it.

The evening ended at around 11:45 p.m. This was very unfortunate, because the audience – and I myself – were still full of the energy of the performance: Knights‘ Power is simply infectious. After the concert, I also had a brief personal encounter with James Knights.
