His new album carries the name „Crooked Hill“

The street is his stage. For many years he has been playing shows in the UK as a one man band with heart and soul. At the moment he is in the middle of the recordings for his second album. What he told me about the sounding of his new record, his roots, his tattoos as well as what he thinks about „Reality Music TV Shows“ and many other things, you will find out in my following interview.

CA: „Thanks for taking time for this interview in the middle of the recording sessions for your second album. How is it going on with that? Can you already tell me how it will sound? Are there any differences to your debut album ‚I See‘?„

Cam Cole: „Heya, no problem thank you, yeah its going really well, this album is a heavier sounding album, should be bigger sounding record as I’ve doubled up the guitar tracks, so it should sound fuller than the first. Still had the same vibe as to capture a really great take and not edit out mistakes later on, so that didn’t change, just have used bigger sound drums and doubling the guitars, not on every song as it didn’t work with the slide. Also my super sentimental guitar that I’ve had since I was seven is on this album, its a beast and is another nice tone alongside my other guitar, which I played on ‚I See‘.“

CA: „Is there already a title for your second album?„

Cam Cole: „Yeah, its called ‚Crooked Hill‘, which is what my first name Cameron means, its a Scottish Celtic name.“

CA: „Where are you originally from? What is your home town?„

Cam Cole:  „I’m originally from a village called „Shamley Green“, which resides in a county called „Surrey“, which is below London.“

CA: „When can listeners expect the release of the second album ‚Crooked Hill‘?“

Cam Cole: „I think ‚Crooked Hill‘ will be out some time around April / May next year with some new singles before that.“

CA : „You are an ex-metalhead, playing as a one man band on the streets of the UK. Please tell us how the whole thing developed. How did you come to music?„

Cam Cole:“ Music was something I always knew was my direction, this show as a one man band developed after a couple of years of me busking by myself with a stomp box and guitar, in that time I was just living as a rolling minstrel, i’d kinda given up any dreams of being a rock star as my previous band projects didn’t really work out and so I gave in to having fun, I was living in the moment, going to hippy jams, raves and festivals, exploring psychedelics and everything else, at that time my busking show was just a means for me to live and travel, I just lived as I went. However naturally it developed, I got a Tamborine, started to sit down so I could play more complex beats and rhythms. Then I saw the farmer foot drum and got that involved and that’s when I stopped partying as much and got back to pursuing a creative project, this time without band members. It was interesting to me to explore the boundaries of what noise I can make on my own.“

CA: „In your videos I saw, that you already own many instruments. Is there an instrument, that you specially like to play and you are proud of?„

Cam Cole : „Right now I have three guitars, one bass, one djembe, one didgeridoo, and two footdrums, to me my fave guitar is one I call „the 4 pounder“ for sentimental reasons, also cos it rocks hardest, I love to play my djembe as well, in particular when in a good drum circle and after consuming mushrooms.“ (blinks)

CA: „It is not easy to sing, play guitar and perform the foot drums at the same time. Could you do this right from the start, or did you have to learn it first?„

Cam Cole: „Playing them all at once is another instrument to learn in itself. It took me time to learn songs and play them well, after a couple of years now I can play something out of my head spontaneously pretty much immediately (depending on what it is) some things are more of a mind fuck than others.“

CA: „Which albums and bands have influenced you the most?„

Cam Cole: „Nickelback ‚Silver Side Up‘ is a sick album, so as Led Zeppelin live ‚How The West Was Won‘. Led Zeppelin are better live in my opinion and Kyuss ‚Welcome To Sky Valley‘ is another banger. Soulfly and Sepultura were huge influences to me, when growing up as well.“

CA: „You live in a van. How long have you lived there and could you ever imagine living in an apartment?„

Cam Cole: „I’ve been on the road for eight years now, to be fair when I walk into a flat or house im like – wow, so much space, but I can’t stand being in one place too long. I love the open road and discovering new places. Of course when winter comes i’ll just chill for a couple of months somewhere in nature. Over that time I’ll want to hibernate and be rooted.“ 

CA: „Is there a place where you especially love to perform and why?„

Cam Cole: „I love Camden Town, its a part of London that resonates with me. The spirit of Camden is rock and liberal as it gets, also a tourist spot so you get loads of people who are just checking it out and aren’t involved in any kind of alternative music scene, but when they are in that location feeling the energy of that place and im jamming on the street, they are so open to the genre so I usually have sick shows there. Can be madness though, there’s a lot of nutters about, some are my friends and some are not, it can get rowdy.“

CA: „You have probably traveled a lot and experienced many things. What has been the greatest experience you can remember?„

Cam Cole: „Wow hard question, I’ve seen some beautiful moons and skys over a evening joint, falling in love was probably the greatest experience of them all, also street performing and witnessing people becoming emotional after seeing a show, seeing them wake up from the dullness they encounter every day all day and seeing that a seed had been planted within them to discover their dreams in reality. I did not expect this it was a wonderful surprise.“

CA: „If you had the opportunity to play in clubs or even big tours, would you do this? Or would you not at all prefer this to street performances?„

Cam Cole: „Yeah I would, it was the original plan when I was a kid, but I now know I don’t need to do this, I want to, I don’t need to, if its meant to be it will, either way ill be playing music. My pursuit in music continues regardless, The street will always be a stage to me.“

CA: „In your music everybody can hear your soul truly speak and everyone notices immediately that you are there with heart and soul. I read that you had offers from „Britain’s Got Talent“ and „America’s Got Talent“ and they offered you a free plane ticket? But you turned them down, because you don’t sell your soul?„

Cam Cole: „Well, I don’t agree with the concept of what reality tv music shows are about and what they stand for, having a platform to humiliate those who can’t sing and controlling and exploiting those that can. I want to write about what I want, if I signed with them, they would control what it is that I want to say and do. Fuck that. I’d rather jam on the street.“

CA: „What does your nose tattoo mean? Do you have any other tattoos?„

Cam Cole: „Its a symbol that was gifted to me from a beautiful witch of light and love. It represents what I have overcome and the journey I am on. Yes I have a few more, and I want more still.“

CA: „Do your other tattoos also have a meaning, like your nose tattoo?„

CA: „Yes, so far I have a Vicvesa Viking tattoo that was hand poked by a good friend who has Viking ancestry, I have another spiral on my elbow, I have a Wiccan gateway that represents Stonehenge and the arch I walked under, I have a rampant lion of Scotland on my ribs which represents my Scottish side from my mother And I have a ring tattooed on my left hand marriage finger that represents a seven year love that I had with a woman who is one of my closest friends today.“

CA: „Have you ever been to Germany? Could you imagine to perform in Germany?

Cam Cole: „Yes I have been to Germany, I like it a lot there, have heard amazing things about Berlin, I would love to perform there and I think I will, its only a matter of time.

Sein neues Album trägt den Namen „Crooked Hill“

Die Straße ist seine Bühne. Seit vielen Jahren spielt er als Ein-Mann-Band mit Herz und Seele Shows in der UK. Zur Zeit steckt er mitten in den Aufnahmen für sein zweites Album. Was er mir unter anderem über den Sound seiner neuen Platte, seiner Herkunft sowie über seine Tattoos verriet und was er von „Reality Music TV Shows“ hält, erfahrt ihr in meinem folgenden Interview.

CA: „Danke, dass Du dir mitten in den Aufnahmen für dein zweites Album Zeit für dieses Interview genommen hast. Wie geht es damit voran? Kannst Du mir schon sagen, wie es klingen wird? Gibt es Unterschiede zu deinem Debütalbum „I See“?„

Cam Cole: „Heya, kein Problem, danke, ja es läuft wirklich gut, diese Platte ist ein härter klingendes Album, sie sollte größer klingen, da ich die Gitarrenspuren verdoppelt habe, also sollte es voller klingen als das Erste. Es hatte immer noch den gleichen Vibe, einen wirklich großartigen Take einzufangen und später keine Fehler herauszuschneiden, also hat sich das nicht geändert. Ich habe einfach größere Sound-Drums verwendet und die Gitarren verdoppelt, nicht bei jedem Song, da es mit dem Slide nicht funktioniert hat. Auch meine supersentimentale Gitarre, die ich habe, seit ich sieben Jahre alt war, ist auf diesem Album. Sie ist ein Biest und ein weiterer schöner Ton neben meiner anderen Gitarre, die ich auf ‚I See‘ gespielt habe.“

CA: „Gibt es bereits einen Titel für dein zweites Album?„

Cam Cole: „Ja, es heißt ‚Crooked Hill‘, was mein Vorname Cameron bedeutet, es ist ein schottischer keltischer Name.“

CA: „Wo kommst du ursprünglich her? Was ist deine Heimatstadt?„

Cam Cole: „Ich stamme ursprünglich aus einem Dorf namens „Shamley Green“, das in einer Region namens „Surrey“ unterhalb von London liegt.“

CA: „Wann können die Hörer mit der Veröffentlichung deines zweiten Albums „Crooked Hill“ rechnen?„

Cam Cole: „Ich glaube, „Crooked Hill“ wird irgendwann im April / Mai nächsten Jahres erscheinen, mit einigen neuen Singles im Vorfeld.“

CA: „Du bist ein Ex-Metalhead, der als Ein-Mann-Band auf den Straßen des Vereinigten Königreichs spielt. Bitte erzähle mir, wie sich das Ganze entwickelt hat. Wie bist du zur Musik gekommen?„

Cam Cole: „Musik war etwas, von dem ich immer wusste, dass es meine Richtung war. Diese Show als Ein-Mann-Band entstand, nachdem ich ein paar Jahre lang allein mit einer Stompbox und einer Gitarre unterwegs war, in dieser Zeit lebte ich nur als rollender Minstrel. Irgendwie gab ich alle Träume vom Rockstar-Dasein auf, da meine früheren Bandprojekte nicht wirklich funktionierten, und so gab ich mich dem Spaß hin, ich lebte im Moment, ging zu Hippie-Jams, Raves und Festivals, erforschte Psychedelika und alles andere, zu dieser Zeit war meine Busking-Show für mich nur ein Mittel zum Leben und Reisen, ich lebte einfach, wie ich ging. Wie auch immer es sich natürlich entwickelte, ich bekam eine Tamborine, begann mich hinzusetzen, damit ich komplexere Beats und Rhythmen spielen konnte. Dann sah ich die Farmer-Fußtrommel und fing an, mich damit zu beschäftigen, und da hörte ich auf, so viel zu feiern und begann wieder, ein kreatives Projekt zu verfolgen, diesmal ohne Bandmitglieder. Es war interessant für mich, die Grenzen des Lärms auszuloten, den ich selbst machen kann.“

CA: „In deinen Videos habe ich gesehen, dass du viele Instrumente besitzt. Gibt es ein Instrument, das du besonders gerne spielst und auf das du stolz bist?„

Cam Cole : „Im Moment habe ich drei Gitarren, einen Bass, ein Djembe, ein Didgeridoo und zwei Fußtrommeln, für mich ist meine Lieblingsgitarre eine, die ich aus sentimentalen Gründen „the 4 pounder“ nenne, weil sie am härtesten rockt. Ich spiele auch gerne meine Djembe, besonders wenn ich mich, nach dem Konsum von Pilzen, in einem guten Takt befinde.“ (lächelt und zwinkert)

CA: „Es ist nicht einfach, gleichzeitig zu singen, Gitarre zu spielen und die Fußtrommel zu beherrschen. Konntest du das von Anfang an, oder musstest du es erst lernen?„

Cam Cole: „Sie alle auf einmal zu spielen, ist noch mal eine ganz eigene Sache. Es hat mich Zeit gekostet, Lieder zu lernen und sie gut zu spielen. Nach ein paar Jahren kann ich jetzt ziemlich spontan etwas aus meinem Kopf heraus unmittelbar spielen (je nachdem, was es ist), einige Dinge sind mehr ein Geistesblitz als andere.“

CA: „Welche Alben und Bands haben dich am meisten beeinflusst?„

Cam Cole: „Nickelback ‚Silver Side Up‘ ist ein krasses Album, sowie auch Led Zeppelin live ‚How The West Was Won‘. Led Zeppelin sind meiner Meinung nach live besser und Kyuss mit ‚Welcome To Sky Valley‘ ist ein weiterer Knaller. Soulfly und Sepultura waren für mich als Heranwachsender ebenfalls ein großer Einfluss.“

CA: „Du lebst in einem Van. Wie lange lebst du schon dort, und könntest du dir vorstellen, jemals in einer Wohnung zu leben?„

Cam Cole: „Ich bin jetzt seit acht Jahren unterwegs, um ehrlich zu sein, wenn ich eine Wohnung oder ein Haus betrete, ist das „wow, so viel Platz“, aber ich halte es nicht aus, zu lange an einem Ort zu sein. Ich liebe die offene Straße und das Entdecken neuer Orte. Wenn der Winter einbricht, kann ich mich natürlich einfach ein paar Monate lang irgendwo in der Natur erholen. In dieser Zeit möchte ich Winterschlaf halten und verwurzelt sein.“

CA: „Gibt es einen Ort, an dem du besonders gern auftrittst und warum?„

Cam Cole: „Ich liebe Camden Town, es ist ein Teil Londons, der mit mir mitschwingt. Der Geist von Camden ist rockig und liberal, wie es nur geht, auch ein Touristenort, so dass man viele Leute trifft, die es nur auschecken und nicht in irgendeine Art von alternativer Musikszene involviert sind. Aber wenn sie an diesem Ort sind und die Energie dieses Ortes spüren und ich auf der Straße jamme, sind sie so offen für das Genre, dass ich dort normalerweise verrückte Shows habe. Es kann aber auch Wahnsinn sein, es gibt viele Verrückte, einige sind meine Freunde und andere nicht, es kann rüpelhaft werden.“

CA: „Du bist wahrscheinlich schon viel gereist und hast viele Dinge erlebt. Was war das schönste Erlebnis, an das du dich erinnern kannst?„

Cam Cole: „Wow, schwere Frage, ich habe ein paar schöne Monde und Himmel über einem abendlichen Joint gesehen, sich zu verlieben war wahrscheinlich das größte Erlebnis von allen, auch Straßenauftritte und zu sehen, wie die Leute nach dem Besuch einer Show emotional wurden, zu sehen, wie sie aus der Tristesse aufwachten, der sie den ganzen Tag über ausgesetzt waren, und zu sehen, dass ein Samen in sie gepflanzt worden war, um ihre Träume in der Realität zu entdecken. Ich hatte nicht erwartet, dass es eine wunderbare Überraschung sein würde.“

CA: „Wenn du die Gelegenheit hättest, in Clubs oder sogar große Tourneen zu spielen, würdest du dies tun? Oder würdest du dies überhaupt nicht den Straßenauftritten vorziehen?„

Cam Cole: „Ja, das würde ich. Es war der ursprüngliche Plan, als ich ein Kind war, aber ich weiß jetzt, dass ich das nicht tun muss. Ich will, ich muss nicht, wenn es so sein soll, werde ich so oder so Musik machen. Mein Streben in der Musik geht ungeachtet dessen weiter, die Straße wird immer eine Bühne für mich sein.“

CA: „In deiner Musik kann jeder deine Seele wirklich sprechen hören, und jeder merkt sofort, dass du mit Leib und Seele dabei bist. Ich habe gelesen, dass du Angebote von „Britain’s Got Talent“ und „America’s Got Talent“ hattest, und sie boten dir ein kostenloses Flugticket an? Aber du lehntest sie ab, weil du nicht bereit bist deine Seele zu verkaufen?„

Cam Cole: „Nun, ich bin nicht einverstanden mit dem Konzept, worum es bei den „Reality-TV-Musikshows“ geht und wofür sie stehen, eine Plattform zu haben, um diejenigen zu demütigen, die nicht singen können, und diejenigen zu kontrollieren und auszubeuten, die es können. Ich möchte darüber schreiben, was ich will. Wenn ich bei ihnen unterschreiben würde, würden sie kontrollieren, was ich sagen und tun soll. Scheiß drauf. Ich würde lieber auf der Straße jammen.“

CA: „Was bedeutet deine Nasentätowierung? Haben du noch andere Tätowierungen?„

Cam Cole: „Es ist ein Symbol, das mir von einer schönen Hexe des Lichts und der Liebe geschenkt wurde. Es steht für das, was ich überwunden habe und die Reise, auf der ich mich befinde. Ja, ich habe noch ein paar mehr, und ich möchte noch mehr.“

CA: „Haben deine anderen Tätowierungen ebenfalls eine Bedeutung, so wie deine Nasentätowierung?„

Cam Cole: „Ja, bisher habe ich eine Vicvesa-Wikinger-Tätowierung, die von einem guten Freund mit Wikinger-Abstammung mit der Hand gestochen wurde. Eine weitere Spirale habe ich auf meinem Ellbogen. Zudem habe ein Wicca-Tor, das Stonehenge und den Bogen, unter dem ich hindurchgegangen bin, darstellt. Des Weiteren habe ich einen zügellosen schottischen Löwen auf meinen Rippen, der meine schottische Seite von meiner Mutter darstellt, und ich habe einen Ring auf meinem linken Ehefinger tätowiert, der eine siebenjährige Liebe darstellt, die ich mit einer Frau hatte, die heute eine meiner engsten Freundinnen ist.“

CA: „Warst du schon einmal in Deutschland? Könntest du dir vorstellen, in Deutschland aufzutreten?„

Cam Cole: „Ja, ich war schon in Deutschland, es gefällt mir dort sehr gut, ich habe erstaunliche Dinge über Berlin gehört. Ich würde gern dort auftreten und ich denke, das werde ich auch, es ist nur eine Frage der Zeit.
